2.05 Ethical Business Practices
1. Companies should examine themselves for business practices that demonstrate Business Ethics and for behaving Socially Responsibly.
- Environmental Protection:
- Workplace Diversity:
- Job Safety:
- Employee Wellness:
2. Government Protection is provided for businesses, consumers, the public, and workers. Protections include:
- Safe Work Environment (standards, inspections and regulations)
- Contract Enforcement (4 standard elements of an effective and enforceable contract)
- Intellectual Property (Patent, Copyright, and Trademark protections)
3. The Consumer Bill of Rights was created in order to provide recourse for consumers when they fall victim to unfair business practices (or products)
- To be Informed (access to product information)
- To Safety (the right not to be harmed by products or services)
- To Choose (the right to choose from all available purchasing options)
- To be Heard (right to contact and voice dissatisfaction)
- To a Remedy (right to redress: fix it, refund money, product exchange, or legal recourse)
- To Consumer Education (right to be able to access product information and data)
- To Service (right to be assisted in the purchase of a good or service as well as help following completion of the transaction)
4. Government Regulation
- Utility Companies
- Promoting Fair Competition
- Assisting Businesses (providing demographic information, buying, and employment of workers.
Q; Is Planned Obsolescence a socially responsible business model? The limited lifetime of a light bulb was allegedly predetermined by engineers in "The Light bulb Conspiracy" movie
The movie "The Man in the White Suit" explores the possible business consequences of inventing material that would not wear out. Negative feedback came not only from business competitors, but also from workers who feared loss of jobs.
